History
The medieval village of Perchtoldsdorf was “founded” in the 11th and 12th century, coinciding with the construction of a chain of fortresses on the east edge of the Vienna Woods. The name of the village, “Perchtoldsdorf”, was first recorded around 1140; today, the market still bears the coat of arms issued in 1406 in its municipal seal.
Culture
Since 1976, a sophisticated reader’s theatre has been held every July in front of the medieval castle of Perchtoldsdorf for the summer theatre crowd. The extensive castle grounds could have been designed as a backdrop for a pleasant evening at the theatre.
Wine
With a great location and a perfect climate for winemaking, Perchtoldsdorf has been synonymous with wine for many
centuries.
Recreation
Well-marked hiking paths, such as the North Alpine Path (Nordalpenweg) connect Perchtoldsdorf with Europe. “Walking in silence” has not only had a renaissance on the Camino de Santiago, but also has a long tradition in lower Austria. Perchtoldsdorf has its own “Via Sacra” to Mariazell in the Vienna Wallfahrerweg (Mariazellerweg), which starts at the St. Augustine parish church.
